🎤 Audio and Video Troubleshooting

Updated over a month ago

Our Immersive Practicum Lab experiences rely on your recorded voice responses to assess your performance. Your audio is essential — if we cannot hear or capture your voice, we won’t be able to evaluate your submission.

By following the steps below, you can ensure your microphone is working, your browser has the right permissions, and your audio is successfully recorded throughout the process.

Before You Record

🌐 Enable Browser Permissions

For the system to capture your audio (and video, if required), your browser must have permission to use your microphone and/or camera.

Check your browser settings:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Permissions

  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions

  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and Site Permissions

  • Safari: Safari → Preferences → Websites → Camera/Microphone

If permissions are blocked, your recording cannot be captured.

🔒 Organization-Managed Devices

If you're using a work-issued or school-issued device, your IT department may have restrictions preventing microphone or camera access. If you think this might be happening, check with your IT team or device administrator to make sure your browser is allowed to use your mic.

🎤 Prepare Your Recording Environment

🔇 Choose a Quiet Space

Background noise — fans, conversations, traffic — can interfere with the system’s ability to hear and understand you. A quiet space helps ensure your performance is assessed accurately.

🎙️ Test Your Microphone

Before you begin recording, confirm your microphone is working. You should see the red audio line move when you speak.

If you don’t see movement:

  • Microphone may not be selected

  • Permissions may still be blocked

  • Your organization may restrict device access

  • The mic may not be functioning

Fix this before beginning your recording.

⚠️ If Your Microphone Can’t Be Detected

If you start recording and your microphone isn’t detected — or if it loses connection while recording — you’ll see an error message letting you know that we couldn’t access your mic.

If this happens:

  • Recheck your browser permissions

  • Make sure the correct microphone is selected

  • Confirm no other app is using your microphone

  • If you’re on a managed device, ensure your IT department hasn’t restricted access

Before You Submit

▶️ Review Your Recording

You have the option to review your recording before submitting it, and this is the best way to make sure your audio was captured properly. This is the most reliable way to ensure your submission can be assessed.

This step helps you confirm that:

  • Your voice was recorded

  • You can be clearly understood

  • There's no unexpected noise or muffling

  • Your mic didn’t cut out

  • Video is clear (if applicable)

If, after reviewing, you want or need to try again — for any reason — you can simply select “No” when asked whether you want to submit. Choosing “No” will restart the recording step and let you record a new response. You can do this as many times as you need until you feel confident that your audio was captured clearly and accurately.

After You Submit

🔁 Reviewing Your Results

If your results include this message:

Unfortunately, there is no response for me to assess. Please try again. Sincerely,

Genius Proctor.

…it means your audio was not captured. In these cases, the system did not receive any audio, so you’ll need to redo the experience and ensure your mic is active, permissions are granted, and the red audio line is moving when you speak.
